jesse-jacksonJesse Jackson criticized Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert on Sunday, saying Gilbert sees LeBron James as a “runaway slave” and that the owner’s comments after the free-agent forward decided to join the Miami Heat put the player in danger.

Shortly after James announced his decision last week, Gilbert fired off an incendiary letter to Cleveland’s fans, ripping the 25-year-old and promising to deliver a title before James wins one. He called James’ decision “cowardly” and later told The Associated Press he believes James quit during a handful of Cavaliers playoff games.

“He has gotten a free pass,” Gilbert told the AP in a phone interview late Thursday night. “People have covered up for (James) for way too long. Tonight we saw who he really is.”

Jackson said Gilbert’s comments were “mean, arrogant and presumptuous.”

“He speaks as an owner of LeBron and not the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers,” the reverend said in a release from his Chicago-based civil rights group, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. “His feelings of betrayal personify a slave master mentality. He sees LeBron as a runaway slave. This is an owner employee relationship-between business partners-and LeBron honored his contract.”

Jackson also called Gilbert’s comments an attack on all NBA players and said the owner should face a “challenge” from the league and the players’ association.

  1. This is the perfect headline for a frum website? It’s never been easier to understand how the Golus effects us!

  2. If any white -oops- caucasian person would have said those exact words, he’d be excoriated and branded a racist.

  3. An owner of a slave, who was willing to pay close to $100 million? Doesn’t exactly sound like shibud Mitzrayim here!

  4. spoken from a true slave
how many slaves does jesse keep as wives? we should ask his kids as well, if we ever find them

  5. The whole situation was very telling of the society we live in. Me first attitude. Even they are modeh such a story would never happen 10-15 years ago with a top athlete abanoding ship for his own selfish agenda.

  6. WHY is this on here? I know we all have a soft spot for JJ in our hearts, but I do think this vile vitriol is a bit inappropriate for a yeshivishe site.

  8. I agree with the comments that this does not qualify as a nesworthy topic for an audience consisting of Torah Jews. Matzav.com – “The online voice of Torah Jewry” – is a slogan that seems to be trampled on in many articles that cater to an American culture saturated and infatuated with baseless news. Woe to a society so depraved that they need to track celebrities and public figures in their personal and sordid lives. To enjoy the excitement of watching a basketball game is one thing, but when we became so attached to people so low – yet glorified on a pedestool, displayed on a showcase – it is reflective of our delusions of this world, a temporary and transitory world. If we would but acknowledge this inherent truth, we would live our lives differently, in a way worthy of bring the perfection of the world through the coming of Mashiach, Bimheirah Beyomeinu.
