chaim-berlinMidwood’s weather forecast for Monday: Cloudy with a chance of religious oddballs. Members of the hate-mongering, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, who brought their anti-Jewish rhetoric to Brooklyn last fall, will visit Midwood next week as part of their “Godsmack Tour.”According to the Church’s website, www.godhatesfags.com, members of the unhinged right-wing Christian God squad plan to protest outside of Yeshivas Rabbeinu Rabbi Chaim Berlin on Coney Island Avenue between avenues L and M as well as Yeshiva Torah Teminah, on Ocean Parkway between Ditmas and 18th avenues this Monday, on Oct. 11, beginning at 12:30 pm.  The protest will not take place today, as some had reported earlier.

“We will picket to remind the Jews that a remnant of them will be saved if they turn to their God, but that the rest will be cast into everlasting fire in…,” noted the website. “The Lord’s promises are good and he has promised to save 144,000 obedient Jews who hearken his commandments and repent. The rest of the Jews represent the disobedient masses of mankind who will dwell eternally where the worm that eats them never dies and the fire ascend up forever and ever.”

Neighborhood religious and political leaders are already preparing counterprotests, according to Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Borough Park).

“The Westboro Baptist Church is nothing more than a veiled neo-Nazi group spewing venom and bile indiscriminately,” said Hikind. “I cannot and will not stand idly by while these sick individuals disparage and vilify Jews, rehashing age-old anti-Semitic canards such as the Jews killed J-.”

Westboro’s anti-Jewish hate speak is well established.

When they came to Brooklyn last October, Westboro protestors – about seven in total, including small children – held placards reading, “Jews Killed J-,” “Israel is doomed,” “Jews stole the land” and “Mourn for your sins.”

But Brooklyn counter-protestors – who outnumbered the Westboro group 30 to one according to some accounts – shouted down the religious zealots, sending them back to Kansas with their tails between their legs.

Westboro members were beaten, but left unbowed, as this new round of protests prove.

The group’s still proudly standing behind its backwater beliefs, claiming their blitzkrieg protests are actually “warnings.”

“[The Jews’] time is about gone and they have to be held accountable for spilling the blood of [J-],” Shirley Phelps-Roper, a spokeswoman and attorney for the church told us last year. “We want [the Jews] to understand that we will be the fateful witnesses in the spirit of grace and supplication and that we will mourn for them when their time comes.”

  1. The Yeshiva is named “Rabeinu Chaim Berlin”. The insiders of the Yeshiva get very offended, rightfully so, when the “Rabeinu” is omitted. After all, he was a gaon, and gadol b’yisroel – not to be called by his first name.

  2. tell all those publicity hound politicians to just ignore those clowns! those clowns from kansas are much less a threat to those who smile at us and hate us no less. by couner protesting you give a group of 10 the publicity of 100! whose the threat those clowns or the clow politicians who love to demonstrate their concern?

  3. Certainly those who consult with Daas Torah will ignore these nuts and not give them the attention they crave. But I am afraid some local politicians will be more interested in their own chance at apearing on TV than in tachlis.

It would be nice to hear the respective Yeshivos issue calls to all yidden to refrain from showing up and from staging any “counter” protests. Maybe the JDLniks and other assorted baryanim will respect the fact that this particular episode is happening in the daled amod of the olom hatorah where their actions are not any more welcome than the Westboro nuts.

  4. Commenter # 1 is correct.

I am mocheh for the kovod/kovod haTorah of R. Chaim Berlin.

    R. Chaim Berlin was the son of the heiliger Netziv of Volozhin.

  5. to #2,
When you say, “ignore them.” are you reffering to the protesters or the insiders at the Yeshiva mentioned in the post previous to yours?

  6. I think the Yeshivos should have mock Hakofos outside with blaring music no less.I’m sure the media would focus on that rather than on those pathetic sick baldies.

  7. to # 1 & 6,
The actual name is Mesivta Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin. I don’t think the insiders get offended at all as they consider themselves chaim berliners and when asked where they learn they answer with chaim berlin.

  8. These are very demented people. They picket funerals of fallen US soldiers. A free speech case about their tactics is currently before the US Supreme court.

  9. Attn: #10 Rescue

    I am speaking from experience.

I myself, one time referred to, in writing, to the Yeshiva with the omission of Rabbeinu – and was respectfully asked by one of the long time members of the Yeshiva’s Hanhala, and a very close talmud of Rav Hutner z”l – to please rectify the common error mistake for the future.

  10. although admittedly the sweetest thing to see would be if they let the bochurim deal with these fools, however the proper thing to do is to ignore them and not give them any validity.
HOWEVER SOME POLITICAL INDIVIDUALS WILL RUIN THIS CLEAN TACTIC, AND THEY SHOULD BE CONTACTED AND TOLD THAT THEIR METHOD IS NOT WANTED. I mean practically speaking what good will a counter-protest do for anybody, if its for us, we were never insulted in the first place, and for those who were whats that going to help. If its for the goyim, the ones who like us will still like us and the ones who don’t will only be irritated by our “counter” protest. personally, as was mentioned in a comment above, as long as you don’t give them recognition, i believe they will not be recognized.

  11. Pikeach, as a Chaim Berliner, what #10-rescue said is true.

In response to #5- uh oh who said:
“Are the yeshivos doing anything so that the younger children won’t see it?”

I don’t know about the other Yeshivos, but the Chaim Berlin they plan on protesting by is on Coney Island. That is the main Beis Medresh and Mesivta. The Yeshiva Ketana (Elementry, grades Kindergarten-8th) is on Avenue I and will not see this disgraceful protest.

  12. Pikeach,
The header of the weekly alumni email I got yesterday says “Mesivta Yehiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin weekly e-newsletter” I don’t know what you were told in the past” I don’t know who corrected you but either they were misstaken or something changed. Additionaly, the yeshiva is registered as a non-profit with a legal name of Rabbi Chaim Berlin

  13. 1. Noone cares about how to mention the yeshiva’s name. Do you understand? NOBODY. Noone cares how members of that yeshiva prefer it to be called. NOBODY. People call it “Chaim Berlin” like they call Yeshivas Rabbeinu Yitzchok Elchanan “Yitzchok Elchanan” and noone cares. So knock off the silliness.
    2. They are genuine sickos and deserve a thorough Texas whipping but that would only render them martyrs for Freedom of Speech. So, much as I’d like to see them beaten and bloodied, that’s not the kind of country we live in.

  14. There Losing All Popularity Amongst All Americans This Is There Only Chance To Get In The Hearts Of There Fellow Babsters Therefore Every one should try to give the least attention to them As Possible

  15. This should defently not be ignored .. In Natzi Germany when the hatered started againts the jews none believed that anything will happen to them many communities just ignored the warning.. Dont ignore these sick anti semitic hater They should be scard away and warned never to come back AND NOT TO START UP WITH THE JEWS BEACUSES THEY ARE STARTING UP WITH HASHEM AND HIS CHOSEN PEOPLE …THERE SHOULD BE A BIG DEMONSTAITION AGAINTS THEM BY PLAYING JEWISH MUSIC AND DANCING….ASHREICHEM YISRAEL
