A Jewish man guarding the Great Synagogue in Copenhagen, Denmark, during a bar mitzvah celebration was killed Sunday in a shooting attack that followed a shooting at a cafe hosting a freedom of speech event.
The victim of the synagogue attack was identified as 37-year-old Dan Uzan, the son of an Israeli father and a Danish mother. One person was also killed in a shooting at the Krudttønden cafe during an event organized by an artist who had caricatured the Prophet Muhammad, echoing last month’s Islamist terror attack that killed 12 people at the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. Police said they killed the gunman behind both Copenhagen attacks.
“We can’t accept when Jews are simply shot on the streets of Europe,” said Israeli Diaspora Affairs Minister Naftali Bennett. “We will not let Jews become easy targets for anti-Semitic attacks.”
“These attacks in Copenhagen follow the similar, brutal targeting of Jews and others in Paris and across Europe,” said World Jewish Congress President Ronald S. Lauder. “European governments should recognize that we are facing a vicious new wave of anti-Semitism and violence. It is crucial that Europe contends with this growing threat.”
