jewelry-shootingUpdated: A 71-year-old Jewish worker at a jewelry store on the Upper East Side of Manhattan was shot and killed in a brazen daytime robbery today, the police said. Detectives and a phalanx of uniformed officers were searching the neighborhood for an armed man – who may have been working with others – who escaped after the robbery and shooting, which occurred at 12:25 p.m.

The details were still unfolding, but the police said that someone entered the store at 962 Madison Avenue, between East 75th and 76th Streets, and that somehow in the ensuing moments, the worker was shot. It was not immediately known if the worker was the owner or an employee.

Paul J. Browne, the Police Department’s chief spokesman, said the victim was shot in the chest and died soon after at Lenox Hill Hospital. He could not immediately say what, if anything, was taken from the store. He could not identify the make of the gun involved in the shooting.

A high-level mobilization began immediately. Officers were scouring the area searching for whoever was responsible, Mr. Browne said.

He said the episode did not fit any ongoing pattern of jewelry store robberies in the area.

Update 4:02 p.m. EST:

The shop is only about 12 feet wide and about 20 feet deep and had jewelry cases hanging on the walls. No customers were believed to be in the store at the time. Carmen Fontanez, a private security guard who patrols the stretch of Madison Avenue, said the man was smoking in front of the store when a tall man wearing a ski mask and sunglasses pushed him inside and shut the door behind him. The shooting happened very quickly, she said.

  1. BARUCH HDAYAN HAEMMETT. Someones’ father, grandfather, brother’s life was just snuffed out. In one second, just like that. We’ve come immune to feeling because it happens so often, but it’s really is painful and sad.
