Jimmy Carter Banned Iranians from Coming to US During Hostage Crisis: Why the Outrage Over Trump?

BuzzFoto Celebrity Sightings In New York - November 05, 2013Trump is a monster, a madman and a vile racist. He’s just like Hitler.

That’s what the biased media would have you believe.

Or you can say that he’s like Jimmy Carter.

Yep, good ol’ Jimmy.

You see, during the Iranian hostage crisis, Carter issued a number of orders to put pressure on Iran. Among these, Iranians were banned from entering the United States unless they oppose the Shiite Islamist regime or had a medical emergency.

Here’s Jimmy Carter saying it back in 1980:

Fourth, the Secretary of Treasury [State] and the Attorney General will invalidate all visas issued to Iranian citizens for future entry into the United States, effective today. We will not reissue visas, nor will we issue new visas, except for compelling and proven humanitarian reasons or where the national interest of our own country requires. This directive will be interpreted very strictly.

Apparently barring people from a terrorist country is not against “our values” after all. It may even be “who we are.” Either that or Carter was a racist monster just like Trump.

Meanwhile here’s how the Iranian students in the US were treated.

Carter orders 50,000 Iranian students in US to report to immigration office with view to deporting those in violation of their visas. On 27 December 1979, US appeals court allows deportation of Iranian students found in violation.

In November 1979, the Attorney General had given all Iranian students one month to report to the local immigration office. Around 7,000 were found in violation of their visas. Around 15,000 Iranians were forced to leave the US.

Meanwhile, any Iranians entering the US were forced to undergo secondary screening.

Interestingly enough, Carter did this by invoking the Nationality Act of 1952. A law originally opposed by Democrats for its attempt to restrict Communist immigration to the United States.

“If this oasis of the world should be overrun, perverted, contaminated, or destroyed, then the last flickering light of humanity will be extinguished,” Senator McCarran said of the law. He was a Democrat.

Now, unlike Muslims, Iranians were not necessarily supportive of Islamic terrorism. Many were and are opponents of it. Khomeini didn’t represent Iran as a country, but his Islamist allies. So Trump’s proposal is far more legitimate than Carter’s action. Carter targeted people by nationality. Trump’s proposal does so by ideology.

Classifying Iranians as a group is closer to racism than classifying people by a racist supremacist ideology that calls for the mass murder and enslavement of non-Muslims, as ISIS is doing today.

  1. This dishonest editorial disgusts me. Does anyone actually need to point out the difference between barring nationals of a hostile country vs. all members of a specific religion? And Carter specifically excepted “…compelling and proven humanitarian reasons …” which is exactly what Syrian refugees are.

  2. Facts are offensive to the numb minded libtards. Can never shlag up the libs – they’ll just jump to another topic, while pretending they weren’t just proven to be idiots yet again.

  3. This article is ridiculous. Trump is pushing islamophobia and xenophobia. Carter was looking for a political response to a very scary climate of Iranian hate. This was not for national protection in all of its ways but also to share the rights of America in our world with the evil Iranian empire.

Trump is creating a hate atmosphere. Carter tried to fight one.

Could Matzav be on its last stand among the righteous to publish an article like this? This promotes Hate in America.

Trump should be banned from entering Israel and other nations. It would send a message to him and the public that hate is not tolerated.

This is a concerning era and I feel more threatened by the Trump Hate Environment than I do from random hate terror from Islamic murderers.

    Terribly scary.

  4. Oh please, Not that I particularly like or admire Jimmy Carter, but at the time, few supporters of the hostile Khomeini government were living legally or semi-legally in the USA, or were seeking paperwork to immigrate there; much less there were millions of sympathizers of the Khomeini govt who were already full citizens of the USA.

  5. But that was when he was a peanut farmer and now is when he’s a old folgie with nuthin to do all day. His peanut brain can think of no more intelligent thing to say!
    שונא ישראל that he is!

  6. Not that I think what Trump said was so bad but one could argue that your camparison to the Carter days is flawed. Iran is a country while Islam is a religion. If you are threatened by another soverienged Nation you can take action against that country and its citizens. Islam is a religion which has millions of worshippers from all over the world. The complaint against Trump is that he is being biased against a group of people based on religion not country of origin.

  7. Bad comparison! Jimmy Carter, a lifelong Democrat, is a great friend of Jews, Muslims and all other minorities so he could never discriminate. Back in 1980 he placed restrictions on Iranians because of the potential threat they posed to the USA. Trump on the other hand is a GOP racist who wants to forcibly convert Jews and Muslims to Christianity.

  8. Don’t stick up for Trump! This guy is stirring up hatred throughout the country. No wonder the white supremacist movement is saying they have finally found someone who supports interests close to their heart. (David Duke, for example, said that other than the fact that Trump has so many connections with the Jews, he has finally found his man.)

Frum Jews: Don’t be taken in by this guy! Don’t help create a United States of Trump! As much as I detest the “all conservatives are anti-Semites and racists” mindset (I am a conservative and voted republican my whole life) this guy truly scares me. He is electrifying a mindset in this country that was mostly buried and should remain so.

  9. It’s totally insane to allow masses of Muslims into the country as they are currently doing while there are many Jihadists among them that will commit mass murder among the American population. We’ve already had the Boston Marathon bombing of the Tzarnaev’s plus their murder of 3 Jews before that. We’ve had the Fort Hood massacre of Nidal Hassan and now we have the San Bernardino mass slaughter. They were all Muslims and Muslims are the basic source of public attacks around the world. They admit that they can’t tell who the radicals are. They must find some way to vet the ones coming in to insure that the public is safe.

If you look at the videos and pictures of the masses of Muslim immigrants, the vast majority are young, virile males who don’t at all look like suffering exiles. They are clearly not a simple immigrant group and many of them are surely Jihadists. We should not give them access to our country to inflict harm on the public.
