mccainArizona Sen. John McCain weighed in on the eligibility of Canadian-born Sen. Ted Cruz to be president on Wednesday, saying the decision might be left to the Supreme Court.

“I don’t know the answer to that,” McCain said on The Chris Merril Show on Phoenix’s KFYI550.

McCain added that he faced a similar question when he was the Republican nominee in 2008 because he was born in the Panama Canal Zone when it was a U.S. territory.

“Yeah, it was a U.S. military base,” he said. “That’s different from being born on foreign soil, so I think there is a question.”

Cruz’s mother was a U.S. citizen living in Canada at the time of his birth. Donald Trump raised the issue when he told The Washington Post this week that the Texas senator’s Canadian birth could be a “big problem” for the Republican Party if he won the bid. Read more at BuzzFeed.
