Because Israel has never annexed the West Bank, laws such as those regulating the environment and the workplace do not automatically apply to Jews living beyond the Green Line. Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked announced that she is determined to alter this state of affairs within a year in the teeth of opposition from many officials of her own ministry.
“I established a joint committee along with the Defense Ministry to work on legislation for Yehudah and Shomron, with essentially the purpose being that ultimately any law which was passed in the Knesset will either apply to Yehudah and Shomron by virtue of the legislation itself or by an order of a general or by any other manner which is considered appropriate,” she said.
Opposition MKs accused that this was part of a right-wing plot to annex the West Bank and said it would contribute to the final demise of the two-state peace process.
