Sarah Sperling, the kallah who was wounded in last Sunday’s tragic crash on Highway 1, has awoken in the ICU at Asaf Harofeh Medical Center.

The 20-year-old resident of Neve Yaakov, Yerushalayim, is slated to get married in three weeks to Yaakov (Kobi) Kastelenitz, a talmid of Yeshiva Kol Torah in Yerushalayim.

Today, Sarah, a daughter of Rabbi and Mrs. Avrohom Yitzchok and Dina Sperling, regained consciousness for the first time since the tragedy and spoke to her mother. Sarah said, “I know about my situation. Mommy, why are you smiling?”

Her chosson related that last Sunday, at the time of the accident, he was on the way to yeshiva and did not have his cell phone with him. Later, when he retrieved his phone, he saw that there were 27 missed calls.

“I called my sister and she began to tell me about the tragedy,” Yaakov related. “My brother joined the conversation and told me that I have to get to the hospital immediately. I had not heard about the accident previously.

“I got to the hospital, saw the situation, and spoke to prominent rabbonim, including Rav Chaim Kanievsky. They were mechazeik and encouraged me and gave a brachah for my kallah’s refuah sheleimah. They instructed the public to refrain from lashon hara and machlokes as a zechus for Sarah.”

Sarah and her younger sister Bracha were Bus 402 bus from Yerushalayim to Bnei Brak. Sarah was critically wounded and Bracha was lightly wounded.

Yaakov had spoken to his kallah one hour before the accident.

“She told me that she was going to do errands and shopping for the wedding,” he recalled.

The doctors state that there have been great miracles.

“Despite rumors,” Yaakov said, “Sarah did not have any organ amputated, boruch Hashem. Sarah was sitting on the right side of the bus when it crashed, and all those sitting on the right side flew off the bus and were killed – except for Sarah, who was saved.

“The two seats that were in front of Sarah broke and shattered her leg… The seats in front of her saved her life.

“The sensitive spots in the leg area are the pelvis, knee and ankle, and miraculously, these three places remained completely intact. This was a miracle. Her hand was avulsed and severely damaged, and the paramedic who treated her took her sweater and tied it tightly as a tourniquet, and this saved her hand.”

There is still no decision regarding their wedding date.

Yaakov added, “People spread around a picture from our engagement of Sarah and I, and I ask all those who have the power to do so to remove the picture from virtually anywhere. Sarah is a modest girl, and the release of the picture has been very painful for the family. It was published without the approval of the family.”

All are asked to keep davening for Sarah bas Dinah.

  1. Her arm was severed above the elbow but because she was wearing a sweater with a tight sleeve, the limb did not get lost. They had to reattach it completely.
