Thousands of Kaminetz Yeshiva alumni recently gathered in its new Yerushalayim building to celebrate 120 years since its founding in Slabodka by Rav Boruch Ber Leibowitz, author of Birkas Shmuel. The yeshiva moved to Vilna during World War I and then transferred to Kaminetz, where Rav Leibowitz headed it for forty years until his passing in 1940.

Reestablished in Yerushalayim’s Bucharim neighborhood after World War II, the yeshiva nurtured generations of distinguished rabbonim and roshei yeshiva including the renowned poseik Rav Nechemiah Goldberg; Rav Shlomo Kanievsky (Rav Chaim Kanievsky’s son), rosh yeshiva of Kiryas Melech; Rav Dovid Miller of Ponevezh and Rav Meir Kessler, rov of Kiryat Sefer.

The keynote address at the anniversary celebration was delivered by Rav Yitzchok Scheiner of the Degel Hatorah Moetzes, a talmid of Rav Shlomo Heiman of Yeshiva Torah Vodaath and husband of a late granddaughter of Rav Boruch Ber Leibowitz.
