chiddushei-harimThe kever of the Chiddushei Harim, the first Gerrer Rebbe, Harav Yitzchok Meir Alter, was recently vandalized, with perps painting a swastika and writing “Jude Raus” (“Jew, Get Out) on the wall of the kever near Warsaw, according to a report by Arutz Sheva. Vandals also blocked the entrance to the kever with construction foam. The Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland reports that the same vandals may be responsible for a stone-throwing attack on a bus transporting Yidden who had just visited the kever. In connection with the attacks, the Foundation sent a letter of protest to the Warsaw Police Commander for the Protection of Human Rights.

The Chiddushei Harim and his grandson, Rav Yehudah Aryeh Leib, are buried together in the Jewish cemetery in Gora Kalwaria, better known as Ger.

Almost all Gerrer Chassidim living in pre-war Europe were murdered by the Nazis. The Chiddushei Harim, who managed to escape, set about the task of rebuilding the kehillah in the British Mandate of Palestine, which then became the State of Israel.

  1. The Chidushei harim passed away in europe. His great grandson, the Imrei Emes came to Eretz yisrael and rebuilt Ger, almost from scratch.

  2. Correct, Admor.
BTW, Reb Yehudah Aryeh Leib happens to be the S’fas Emes – arguably as instumental in the formation of the Gerrer dynasty as his heilige Zeide.
