Killing Cancer With Gold

Israeli researchers are using gold to enhance radiation therapy, Nanoscale magazine reported.

A major problem in the treatment of head and neck cancer is the resistance of tumors to traditional radiation therapy, which results in 40% failure despite aggressive treatment.

In experiments with mice, the researchers found that firing infrared laser light on the tumors heats the gold particles and vaporizes adjacent water molecules. This creates tiny bubbles that burst and rip apart the cancer cells.
