Knesset Passes Law Requiring Playgroups To Install Nanny Cams

The Knesset approved a law requiring the installation of cameras in day care centers for toddlers, which will take effect in about nine months.

On Monday, just before the election was announced, the Knesset approved the law as a means to protect toddlers in day care centers.

Fifty MKs supported this bill, which was promoted by the chairman of the Committee for Knesset Rights MK Yifat Shasha Biton, and only two opposed it.

The details of the law, which will come into force on September 1, 2019: The state will subsidize for a year (“adjustment period”) the installation of daycare cameras with seven or more infants – but only facilities that would like to do so.

At the end of this period, on September 1, 2020, the installation of these cameras will be mandatory and will delay the granting of a business license – except in frameworks operating in private homes or facilities where more than 70% of parents do not agree to this step.

The explanatory notes to the law state that  “cameras documenting the care of helpless toddlers can serve as a means of deterrence, control and enforcement that can not be underestimated.”
