ben-gurionA statement signed by several rabbonim has been issued regarding concerns for kohanim flying from Ben Gurion Airport.

After establishing an additional route for Ben Gurion Airport, the statement says, the instances of flights traveling over the Cholon cemetery have substantially decreased.

According to information received in these past weeks, it appears that the majority of takeoffs are done along a route that does not pass over the cemetery, but those that do are only when there is a strong east wind blowing. This appears to relate to a mere 1.3% of flights, but the frequency must nevertheless be studied for over a longer period.

At this point, the statement says, when there is a strong easterly wind blowing – which is common during very hot and hazy weather spells – kohanim are warned to verify whether the take-off will take place on Runway 12, which crosses over the cemetery, or Runway 26, which is not problematic for kohanim.

The statement was signed by Rav Yehuda Silman, RavSariel Rosenberg, Rav Yaakov Farbstein, Rav Chaim Meir Wosner, Rav Moshe Shaul Klein and Rav Dovid Arye Morgenstern.

  1. Pklease verify this . The takeoff runway has not changed yet to the new runway and is still a problem by night . only the landings have so far changed to the new runway . You can see for yourself on planefinders .net and call Vaad Hakohanim to verify . It might change soon but it did not happen yet

  2. I note that most, definitely many, international flights that land at Kennedy, I believe fly over Old Montifore cemetery as they come in for landing.
