A discussion took place at the Knesset Committee for Public Complaints in regard to the reintroduction of magnetometer security devices at the Kosel on Shabbos after Channel 2 videoed an Arab disguised as a chareidi successfully smuggling two knives through a manual inspection.

Rav Hakosel Shmuel Rabinowitz said that many poskim permit the use of magnetometers on Shabbos and that they are used in all hospitals and at Kever Rochel. Small items like keys or buckles do not activate magnetometers, he added. Furthermore, anyone who wants to be machmir could request a manual inspection, although this would take longer. In addition, he said, the Kosel Foundation was considering buying hand-held magnetometers, which would categorize the people being checked as passive participants and further reduce chillul Shabbos.

Rav Efrati, a talmid of Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv, recently wrote that Rav Elyashiv permitted the use of magnetometers on Shabbos when there was no alternative.
