Singer; Deputy Mayor Steven Langert; and Steven Reinman, director of economic development, working with Township attorney Jan Wouters, created the Downtown Merchants’ Commission and appointed a board of five Commissioners.
The Downtown Merchants’ Commission is designed to be a format through which merchants can express their concerns and advise the town council about how to improve the downtown. Topics at the monthly meetings will range from traffic flow to safety and security, parking, quality of life, and the shopping experience, among others.
The board of the Lakewood Downtown Merchants’ Commission is made up of Thomas Calabro, Twin City Jewelers, Clifton Avenue; Hershel Hershkowitz, Toys for Thought, Third Street; Dov Kaufman, Bagel Nosh, Clifton Avenue, who will also serve as a liaison to the Lakewood Development Corporation; Moshe Lankry, Pizza Plus, Fourth Street; and Chesky Shain, Candy Land, Second Street. The alternate to the Commission is Joel Tesser, Gelbstein’s Bakery, Clifton Avenue.
Reinman says, “The focus of the Downtown Merchants’ Commission is to provide a means whereby merchants can actually make their voices heard and seek to better the experience for their customers. They have a common interest to preserve the downtown as a progressive and productive business district. This Commission is meant to give the merchants an avenue for developing their commonality of thought, purpose, and mission. It is also a means for them to enhance their access to the township committee and the mayor.”
Deputy Mayor Langert says, “The town fathers take pride in our downtown. It’s our shopping mall, our jewel that will bring progress and prosperity to the downtown. We invite all the downtown merchants to be active and attend the monthly meetings.”
