lakewood-shopriteLakewood, NJ – Lakewood’s ShopRite will soon join Hobby Lobby and Staples in the once vacancy-riddled Friendship Plaza on Route 9 in Howell, NJ.

Saker ShopRites Inc. will open the new location in the vacant 70,000-square-foot space at the shopping center’s southern end once home to Kmart, which closed late last year.

The Lakewood ShopRite branch at the corner of Route 9 and Kennedy Blvd. will close next Tuesday.

ShopRite will move to Howell, where it will expand into the 20,000-square-foot space that currently houses PetSmart, which will move into a 19,000-square-foot space next to Staples.

In total, ShopRite will occupy 90,000 square feet. ShopRite’s arrival comes on the heels of that of Hobby Lobby, which filled a 48,400-square-foot space vacated by Pathmark around the same time that Kmart closed.

“ShopRite is going to spearhead the re-invigoration of Howell’s Friendship Plaza,” Michael Gartenberg, the director of real estate at Garden Commercial Properties, the Short Hills-based owner of the shopping center, told the APP. “Given the new lineup of ShopRite and Hobby Lobby and Staples and PetSmart…it’s going to (lead to) a rebirth of that shopping center.”

The new Howell ShopRite will open next Wednesday, though it will not house a Kosher Experience like the Lakewood store did.

The following about Saker is from their website: Beginning with a small “mom and pop” store opened in 1916 in Freehold, New Jersey, the Saker family has operated grocery stores for almost 100 years. From opening its first supermarket in 1956 to the latest generation of stores, Saker ShopRites, Inc. has been an industry leader. Saker ShopRites owns and operates 29 supermarkets in central New Jersey, including Monmouth, Ocean, Middlesex, Somerset and Mercer counties.

The site of the Lakewood ShopRite is expected to be taken over by a Gourmet Glatt superstore.
