moises-saba[Video below. Levaya update below.] Levaya details are being finalized as the tragic passing of noted philanthropist Moises Saba (first reported here) has plunged the Jewish community of Mexico into sadness. The helicopter crash outside of Mexico City took place while Moises was on the way home from a family simcha in the Syrian community of Flatbush, Brooklyn. He was traveling with his wife, his son Avrohom (Albert) and Avrohom’s wife, when the helicopter crashed. The Sabbas had taken a private jet Sunday afternoon from New York to Mexico and then transferred to the chopper for the rest of the trip home.

According to the Israeli reports, Chief Sephardic Rabbi Rav Shlomo Amar has said to delay the levaya until all body parts have been recovered. A ZAKA team has made its way to the site of the crash. The family is also awaiting the arrival of Moises’ son Chaim, who is learning in Yeshiva Kol Torah in Yerushalayim.

A tremendous supportrt of Torah institutions, Moises was close with the family of Rav Ovadiah Yosef, two of whose sons are en route to Mexico for the levaya.

Moises supported numerous yeshivaos, chessed organizations and individuals, and was known for his generosity and kavod for gedolei Torah. He was a prominent supporter of Zaka, which, as fate would have it, had been slated to found a branch in Mexico in the near future. Instead, Zaka volunteers from Israel have boarded a flight to a assist in the post-crash recovery efforts, based on the halachic guidance of Rav Ovadiah Yosef.

Moises, who was 47, owned real estate companies, medical companies and a communications network, including the Mexican TV Azteca network, the Unefon phone company and two hotels in Acapulco.

Update, 7:25 p.m. IDT: Matzav.com has just been informed that Rav Ovadiah Yosef has ruled that the levaya should indeed take place today, rather than waiting until tomorrow. All four bodies have been identified. The ruling by Rav Amar to wait until tomorrow, we have learned, was due to the fact that the initial information passed to him regarding the identification of the bodies was incorrect. After Zaka volunteers said that the bodies could be identified, Rav Yosef said that the levaya should not be delayed.
