Lieberman Plots To Close Yeshiva

Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman is promoting a bill that would enable him to shut down the Eli pre-military yeshiva over comments made by its rosh yeshiva,Rav Yigal Levenstein, against female conscription, Arutz Sheva reported.

The bill would empower Finance Ministers to strip religious institutions from government funding if their heads call for the evasion of army service, incite or discriminate. A senior political source told Arutz Sheva that the bill’s purpose was to close the Eli yeshiva and oust Rav Levenstein. The bill would also impact yeshivos whose heads speak out against the draft.

Due to the Eli yeshiva‘s prominence in the Religious Zionist community, the bill is not expected to pass.
