joe-liebermanWhen President Barack Obama visits Stamford, Connecticut tomorrow, he won’t see Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., a resident and native of the city. Lieberman is not planning to attend the fundraiser for U.S. Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., because he’ll be celebrating Shabbos at his Strawberry Hill Avenue home, his spokeswoman said.”While he’s delighted the president is coming to Stamford, because of the Sabbath, he won’t be able to attend,” spokeswoman Erika Masonhall said.

Obama will speak at Friday evening’s fundraising dinner for Connecticut’s embattled senior senator at the Hilton Stamford hotel. Two U.S. Marine Corps helicopters were seen landing and taking off in Stamford yesterday. A city ordinance prohibits routine helicopter landings in Stamford.

While Dodd faces a challenging campaign for re-election in 2010, Masonhall said Lieberman has loudly endorsed him so he can “continue (his) work for the state and the nation.”

In the past, Lieberman’s staff has said juggling his political ambitions and religious obligations is a balancing act, but one that has always been a part of his 30-year career in public service.

As an Orthodox Jew, Lieberman keeps Shabbos. He has maintained this throughout his life, though it has been more apparent to the public during campaign season.

During Lieberman’s vice presidential bid in 2000, presidential campaign in 2004 and Senate re-election race in recent years, many events were rescheduled to accommodate his beliefs, and he willingly missed others to keep Shabbos.

“There are some political events that I’m going to miss on Friday night and Saturday – I already have,” Lieberman told the Associated Press in 2003. “But I made a decision early on in my life what my priorities are, and I just hope and believe that people will respect that.”

  1. THE CITY OF STAMFORD WAS ZOCHEH TO HAVE THE YESHIVA BAIS BENYAMIN IN ITS MIDST..THE YESHIVA IS EQUAL OR SIMILAR TO YESHIVAS VOLOZHIN OF YESTERYEAR. THE FUTURE GEDOLEI YISROEL ARE COMING FORTH FROM THIS MOKOM TORAH…THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT THIS YESHIVA HAS AND ALWAYS HAD A TREMENDOUS INFLUENCE ON SENATOR LIEBERMAN S LIFE.. ASK YIDDEN AND GOYIM IN STAMFORD ABOUT THE YESHIVA. THERE EYES AND MOUTHS OPEN AND WIDEN FROM THE TREMENDOUS IMPRESSION THEY ACKNOWLEDGE FROM THIS YESHIVA.

  2. Kollelyungerman – you can turn off the all-caps. We heard you. However, have you considered that Sen. Lieberman may have had other influences in life – his parents and grandparents, perhaps? Maybe his own rebbes and Roshei Yeshiva? Maybe his wife, who backs him up when he must make choices that might have a negative impact on his career?

I admire his faithfulness to Torah and Shabbos. It is particularly difficult for someone with a political career. Let’s give credit where credit is due. Yeshivas are wonderful and do have a great positive influence on their communities, but they can’t take all the credit for everything.

  3. Very intresting, Is the D’zman for candle lighting much diffrent in CT then NYC? It was last summer, I was listening to Mark levine on 770 on my way to shul in the car. It was 2 minutes to Shabbos and Mark Said that Joe lieberman will be on the next hour. Unless he was in LA in was kind of strange if he claims to be Shomer Shabbos, maybe he knew the religious jews wont be on the radio to hear him. Or maybe Mark levine spoke to him before the show and put the recording on and pretended that it was live. Who knows.

  4. Reb Yid (#3): While Reb Mark may or may not be shomer Shabbos, Reb Joe certainly is, so – rather than be choshed b’kesheirim – my guess is your guess that it was previously taped is correct.

  5. I would just like to add one small thing about Joe Lieberman, His daughter who got married this past summer is wearing a Shaitel, I have this first hand information from a person who attended the wedding, therefore he deserves lots of credit for raising such a wonderful & frum daughter, i understand that he is some what affiliated with Chabad, as they where invited to the wedding.
