litzmanOn the second official day of coalition negotiations, teams from Likud-Yisrael Beiteinu met with a delegation from United Torah Jewry. The delegation consisted of the party’s leading MKs – Moshe Gafni and Yaakov Litzman – as well as former UTJ MK Meir Porush.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Litzman said that he expected the negotiations about demands by Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid that nearly all chareidi yeshiva students be drafted to be the major issue in the discussions. In response to reporters’ questions, Litzman said that his party’s stance was well known, and that he could not speculate on whether or not Lapid would compromise.

Litzman said that if the issue was “equal sharing of the defense burden,” then chareidi yeshiva students were not the only shirkers the new government must deal with. “We must add to this equal sharing of the burden by Arabs. Thus must apply to everyone.” Litzman said that coalition negotiations would continue, “but a basic principle of future meetings must be that any student that wishes to learn must be able to do so.”

According to plans promoted by Lapid, only 400 of the top talmidim in chareidi yeshivos would receive exemptions from military service. Everyone else would have to serve in the army, or at least national service. Lapid has repeatedly said that he does not intend to compromise on this position, and that the price for his Yesh Atid’s joining of a government headed by Binyamin Netanyahu would be the latter’s acceptance of this point.

Speaking to reporters, Gafni said that “it would be very much worth the Prime Minister’s while to ensure that Shas and United Torah Jewry are in the government.” UTJ, he said, was loyal, stable, and had student by Netanyahu in the past. However, he added that UTJ was not interested in compromising to make Lapid feel more comfortable with a government that would include chareidi parties. “Nobody in UTJ would support the idea of limitations on the number of Yeshiva students.”

  1. Either this guy is really stupid; or he is a major Sonay Yisroel!! You guys can decide for yourselves. By equating his position with that of the Arabs, is he stating that chareridim represent a fifth column? This is about fairness and responsibility to the rest of clal yisroel!!! This position says it all.

  2. Lapid and Bennett: A Deal

Yair Lapid of Yesh Atid and Naftali Bennett of Bayit HaYehudi have reached agreement regarding their demands to enter the forming coalition government, Makor Rishon reported.

The two parties have a combined 31 seats, carrying significant coalition power, aware that together they will have the ability to demand a great deal from the Likud/Beitenu.

According to the daily Maariv, a deal has been sealed and the two parties will either enter the coalition together or remain in opposition together. They are confident their 31 seats carry much weight and the union will permit them to increase their leverage at the negotiating table.

Interestingly, while most analysts believe Yesh Atid will be a senior coalition member, the same assumption is not being made regarding Bennett’s party, which many feel is the least desirable from the prime minister’s perspective, even less than the chareidim. Mr. Netanyahu realizes with Bayit HaYehudi on board, additional concession to the PA (Palestinian Authority) will be significantly more difficult.

Dati leumi rabbonim on Monday 24 Shevat 5773 are holding a kenos during which it is expected they will issue a call to Bennett to cut ties with Lapid, perhaps the result of recent meetings between leading dati leumi rabbonim and admorim

  3. Which contradicts this :

The daily Yisrael Hayom newspaper reports on Sunday, 23 Shevat 5773 that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu prefers a coalition that includes the chareidi parties over Yesh Atid. The report explains that if compelled to select between Yair Lapid or Shas and Yahadut Hatorah, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu prefers the chareidim for the prime minister does not want the stability of his coalition resting on the shoulders of Lapid. In essence, from the perspective of numbers, it is almost equal as Lapid has 19 seats while Shas and Yahadut Hatorah have a combined 18 seats.

Ideally the prime minister would like a broad-based coalition that included all of them but if Yesh Atid remains adamant regarding the share the burden issue, it will have to be one or the other, Lapid’s party or the chareidim.

  4. In other words, Haredi are just as much a security risk as Arabs? That’s why Arabs aren’t drafted to the IDF – they’re seen as potential security risks. And he’s equating Hareidim with Arabs, so Hareidim are potentially disloyal too? I don’t think he thought through what he was saying.

  5. Does Litzman really equate Chareidim with Arabs? Arabs are not loyal and would help the enemy, how can he say if you draft us,you must draft them?It is ludicrous and doesn’t win him any points in an argument.

  6. This Lapid character is very dangerous to all Bnei Torah! Like Father like son, Yair is rotten thru and thru! If you want to keep your head in the sand, go ahead! The Frummah should RUN from Lapid!

  7. Arguing about sharing a “burden” would be like trying to discuss racial theories with the Nazis. It’s a pretext for pure unadulterated hatred. No sense arguing.

  8. #3 The reason all governments (Labor, Likud, Meretz, etc.) are usually happy to shake hands with the Charedi parties is because besides funds for families and deferments for learning there are ZERO RED LINES. Governments can then go ahead with ‘Piece Plans, and ‘Disengagements’ etc.

Perhaps the religious parties will recalculate this position since 50% of its population is past the green line in Betar, Kiryat Sefer, Nvei Yakov, Psegat Zev and Har Nof.

  9. If my memory serves me right? I think there is a book called “pirkie Avos”. That was published about 2,000 years ago (non fiction) that states that you shouldn’t hang around politicians because of their dishonesty. I think there are a few copies left that can be found in Jewish bookstores

  10. Druzim and some Beduins do go into the army, and even some Arabs, including Arab Muslim volunteer. Not many. There was recently a small scandal when an army officer made a Muslim soldier attend kiruv lectures by rabbis on an education day. The soldier didn’t want to, was threatened, and went. Then the officer told him he had to wear a kippa but he wouldn’t and he was supposed to stand trial for that. Disgusting. Don’t know what happened.

Anyway, they could make Arabs do national service. But the comparison is frightening and an insult to charedi Jews.

  11. No normal army would take in its enemies to be its soldiers, unless they want to take out the white flag of surrender. What a crazy world. Maybe he made this suggestion because he knows it’s not feasible and wouldn’t happen anyway. All the Torah parties (chareidim & nationalists) must unite for a Jewish EY! Otherwise, all the frumkeit in the world means nothing. Torah without EY is incomplete and EY without Torah is incomplete.
