Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman is maintaining his position and this morning made it clear that if the Draft Law does not pass the three readings necessary to turn it into law by the time the budget is approved, he will not support the budget.

The “Draft Law” would include a new “Basic Law” enshrining Torah study as a basic value of the State of Israel, thereby allowing the government to circumvent a 2012 ruling by the Supreme Court.

The ruling, made in response to a suit filed by secular Israelis, declared allowing charedi yeshiva students to defer army service to be discriminatory.

  1. They don’t need chareidim in the army. They want to just brainwash young chareidim into excepting the toeiva lifestyle and became cynical of Torah values.

    • They need everyone else, just not charedim? What would happen if everyone would become charedim, would there be anyone left to defend the country? I guess charedim are a special caste of people who are required to be defended by the heathen class.

  2. He has a bad track record when it comes to elections plus he is being a fool
Does he want the coalition to really fall ?!

  3. Steven – If everyone becomes Chareidi (I don’t mean the term, I mean people who sit and learn Torah) then Mashiach will come and we won’t need an army!
The whole misconception is that people think that chareidim don’t appreciate the soldiers. Nothing could be further than the truth. We have a lot of hakaras hatov to them and are internally grateful.
It is just that we believe that that the boys who are sitting and learning Torah are no less protecting the country, but rather protecting on a much greater level. As one of the Gedoilim once said – if the government would only understand what every boy who is sitting and learning is doing for the safety of the country – they would put two soldiers on each side of him to make sure that he doesn’t leave his Gemara!

    • except would you be ok with sending a charedi bochur to the front line without a gun together with armed soldiers? no then your philosophy would derail!

  4. Steven, I should remind you that the Chazon Ish told Ben Gurion that if in the army they have regular minyanim and a set seder of learning every day, they will never have a war. But as Ben Gurion famously said, the army is the melting pot of Israeli society. Torah is what protects us, not the IDF or anyone else.
