rav-david-lau-rav-yitzchak-yosefA bill seeking to abolish the practice of having two chief rabbis of Israel, an Ashkenazi one and a Sefardi one, was jointly proposed Monday by the Hatnuah and Habayit Hayehudi parties, led by Tzippy Livni and Naftoli Bennet respectively.

The bill would no longer allow separate Ashkenazi and Sefardi chief rabbis, but it wouldn’t go into effect for another decade even if it is passed. In one decade, the terms of Sefardic chief rabbi Rav Yitzchak Yosef and Ashkenazi chief rabbi Rav Dovid Lau will end. The two were elected earlier this year.

  1. Don’t think that’s a good idea at this particular time. The reason these two came up with this is because of the whole agenda being perpetrated on Israel today and that is the watering down of Yiddishkeit in EY (and worse). No doubt there. Israel is split in two between the Ashk. and Seph. communities. Customs and traditions can be quite different and having one Rav might cause strife amongst the population. Having the two Rabbanim at this time makes more sense, until Moshiach, when we will again be one nation with one heart and mind, with our one Torah.
