With the start of chodesh Elul, yeshivos and kollelim resumed their sedarim of learning. As the year of learning began, a new kollel opened in Los Angeles on La Brea Avenue, next door to Congregation Shaare Torah. Rav Nechemia Langer, rov of Shaare Torah, enthusiastically spoke about the new kollel, Netzach Yisroel, named after Rav Yisroel Belsky zt”l, father-in-law of Reb Shlomo Yehuda Rechnitz.

“There was a desire to expand the Torah base of the shul,” explained Rav Langer. “We have specifically chosen a younger group of kollel members to mirror the younger baalei batim of Shaare Torah.”

Several years ago, Reb Shlomo Yehuda Rechnitz and a few key members of the shul began plans to import a new kollel. Under the guidance and assistance of Rabbi Berish Goldenberg, Daf Yomi maggid shiur at Shaare Torah, and Duvi Blonder, the search for a rosh kollel and kollel members began in earnest.

Rabbi Reuven Markin, an experienced rosh kollel, was found to be a perfect fit. The members of the kollel, a magnificent group of fifteen yungeleit, showed the desire and ability to become part of this venture. Most of the young married yungeleit were previously talmidim of Bais Medrash Govoah in Lakewood.

Aside from the all-day learning schedule and a night seder to end the day, the plan is to incorporate learning with members of the shul and the community at large.

Members of the kollel include Rabbis Sholom Hirschman, Yehuda Gorelick, Aharon Feldman, Menachem Schwartz, Yehoshua Jakobovits, Dovi Kenig, Tzvi Yaakov Shapiro, Yehuda Flagler, Ari Soibelman, Moshe Ribiat, Yechezkel Hertz, Tzvi Yehuda Simon, Yaakov Rubin, Yaakov Goldberg and Eli Kirshner.

  1. That makes 13 Kollelim in Los Angeles, currently. This new Kollel is 2 blocks south of the Chasidishe Kollel and 2 blocks east of the Lakewood Kollel.

  2. Are the avreichim given a stipend that they can actually live on? In California they would probably need at least $4000 a month to begin to think about “getting by”…

    • I agree with your sentiment, but let’s not forget the many, many talmidim Rav Belsky has taught, mentored and guided over the years as well as the nifla’os haBorei he pointed out to young campers during his Camp Agudah time.

  3. There are 4 kollels in LA. The one in the article, chassidishe kollel, Lakewood kollel, and Rabbi Gradon’s kollel in Pico.

Re the finances – they are getting a package valued at over $10,000 a month.

    • LA Guy,
You really don’t know your own community. What about LINK Kollel-Rav Asher Brander, Mishkan Torah Kollel, all the Moroccan, Persian and other Kollelim in and around Los Angeles? We have a total of 12 Kollelim here in and around Los Angeles. With this latest Kollel, we’ll have 13.
