lubavitcher rebbeThe death certificate of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, is on the auction block, JTA reports.

The official certificate, issued Aug. 2, 1995, and mailed by the New York Department of Health to the Rebbe’s niece, Dalya Rothman, in Yerushalayim, is being auctioned by Virtual Judaica on its website, with 31 bids so far and a current high bid of $2,700. The auction will end on Jan. 19.

The Rebbe died on June 12, 1994 at age 92, at Beth Israel Hospital in New York. He left behind no children and is buried in Montefiore Cemetery in Queens, New York.

It is not clear why the death certificate was issued to the Rebbe’s niece more than a year after his death, JTA says.

  1. Ms Rothman may be the Rebbe’s next of kin and the executrix of his estate. As such, she would have needed copies of the death certificate to deal with legal matters pertaining to his estate. There are times when unexpected situations arise and you need extra copies of the death certificate. This could be the reason the certificate was issued a year later.

  2. Any attorney can go to the NYC Municipal Building in Manhattan and, for $10, purchase an official certified copy of any death certificate.
The original is on file there. All certificates not on file are copies, certified or non-certified.
Whomever is paying $1,200 for this is a real fool!

  3. What a scam., there is a differents between a death certificate that was issued for the next of kin and the one you can get from the city for $10

One is city official paper the other is a Xerox

To you this certificate might be worth $10 but to a collector its worth …well $3100 now
