Lufthansa Knew Lubitz Was Depressed

Andreas Lubitz told his Lufthansa flight school that he had a “previous episode of severe depression” in 2009 while he was training to become a pilot.

Lufthansa said Tuesday that it gave additional documents pertaining to the case of Germanwings Flight 9525 to the Dusseldorf public prosecutor, including files about Lubitz’s mental-health history.

“These also include the email correspondence of the copilot with the Flight Training Pilot School,” Lufthansa wrote on its website. “In this correspondence he informed the Flight Training Pilot School in 2009, in the medical documents he submitted in connection with resuming his flight training, about a ‘previous episode of severe depression.'”

Last week, Lufthansa’s chief executive told reporters that Lubitz “was 100 percent flightworthy without any limitations.” Read more.
