rav-ovadiah-yosef-peres1According to a report this morning in the Maariv, Chacham Ovadiah Yosef, head of the Shas party’s Moetzet Chachmei Hatorah, believes that Israel must restore its relations with the U.S. government at any cost, even if it is required to stop building in Yerushalayim.

Financial commentator Ben Kaspis, who wrote the report, says that the remarks were made by Rav Yosef during a meeting with President Shimon Peres on Chol Hamoed Pesach.

During the meeting, according to the report, Rav Yosef expressed his strong feelings regarding the relationship between Israel and the United States. “We must do everything to get along with the Americans,” he said. “We have to pay any price to rebuild the relationship, and we should not provoke the nations of the world…”

Rav Yosef said that Israel can stop building in Yerushalayim for some time and concentrate construction efforts in other areas like the center of the country, “and nothing will happen if we [wait to] build in Yerushalayim in a few years,” he said.

Interior Minister Eli Yishai claimed today that the comments “never happened, but the Maariv writer states that his report can be corroborated by those who were present at the meeting.

It is interesting to note that Rav Yosef’s remarks are very similar to comments made by Maran Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv to Yerushalayim Mayor Nir Barkat, who paid a visit to Rav Elyashiv at his home at 10 Rechov Chanan in Meah Shearim on Chol Hamoed Pesach. During the course of conversation, Rav Elyashiv told the mayor, “We must not ignore the United States. They must be listened to.”

  1. I hope that people in the chareidi public will actually listen to da’as torah on these issues, instead of expecting the gedolim to follow the right wing leanings of the chareidi street.

First of all its not clear that Rav Ovadya really said it. Eli Yishay who is very close to him is denying it. Even if it is true, there are many other Gedolim who say to continue to build. If Israel gives in to the pressure on this, they will be subject to more demands. it is high time that the Govt of Israel showed some courage and did that which is in its own best interest.

  3. Shimon Peres is a left wing, pro-Arab speaker for years already. Would have loved to hear the dialogue between them!! Remember good decisions are made with accurate, honest and proper details and concepts given over so a psak is a true daas.

  4. there has been no greatest fighter for Shleimas Haaretz than the Lubavitcher Rebbe Zt”l. The Rebbe was unequivocal that we must be unequivale that Eretz Yisroel is a Nachlas Olam to an Am Olam.

It is our land! No appeasment.
the rebbe urged that if we show strength and be proud and unflinching, they will respect us more
