Man Dies After NYPD Chokehold

nypdAfter being put into a chokehold by one cop and having his head slammed against the sidewalk by other officers, a 400-pound asthmatic father from Staten Island died on Thursday. “I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe!” Eric Garner, 43, was seen shouting as at least five NYPD officers took him down.

Garner, who was married and had six children and two grandchildren, eventually stopped fighting and appeared to go unconscious as paramedics were called.

The incident was recorded on smartphones by an angry crowd.

According to police, Garner had a record for selling untaxed cigarettes, and so cops went to arrest him after seeing him selling them on Thursday.

The police claim he “was being placed in custody, went into cardiac arrest and died.” However, the family says he was breaking up a fight, and that the police were harassing him and he did not have any cigarettes on him or in his car. NYPD has launched an internal investigation. Read more at the New York Daily News.

  1. why on earth are there so many obnoxious rules about cigarettes? I’d give my kids if they’d only be a couple of years older. What the doctors say is made up. it used to be unthinkable to learn a tosfos without a cigarette. whoever speaks out against it is speaking out against the gedolim. it is yedua that r’ elyashiv said it is muter.

  2. To comment #1

If you are looking to antagonize people, pretty bad job
Your immaturity sticks out from all corners of the comment

  3. To Bemes,

What a silly comment! It is likewise yadua that rov poskim have said that you don’t need a p’sak for something that is plain dangerous. And don’t give anyone the ridiculous claim of shomer pesa’im Hashem, because if you just take a look at each pack of cigarettes you will see clearly how injurious to your health it is. Whether or not the cops were right is of course a different topic.

  4. The gedolim who smoked only smoked before the times it was known as a health risk. Because now it falls under venishmartem meod..

  5. #1, Thank you for your dumb, unenlightening, and completely unsourced comment. We are grateful to you for the display of pure logic and rationality. Please continue to express your wisdom in the future- for the sake of Klal Yisroel.

  6. Bemes,
Just a fact. Both my parents died from smoking. B”H I stopped. I smoked 3 pks a day for 20 years. It was hard, but worth it. Get a better bad habit that doesn’t affect your health.
