Toronto police are on the hunt for a man they say has been scamming money from women in the local Jewish community.
Det.-Const. James Turnbull said the suspect is alleged to have targeted Jewish women at various subway stations, including Eglinton, St. Clair and Glencairn.
Upon entering the train, the man is believed to have told the women that he is from Israel, gaining their trust before telling them of his so-called financial troubles. He then asks for loans and promises he would repay his victims upon returning home. Each victim would then turn over a quantity of money.
“I’m sure there are probably tonnes of people who’ve handed him money just believing he is in need… not thinking twice about it,” said Det.-Const. Turnbull.
The case was initially brought forward in December 2011. Six victims have come forward and police believe there may be others.
The suspect is described as a white male with an olive complexion, between the ages of 45 and 50. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 416-808-1300, Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8437) or online at [external] http://www.222tips.com.
