According to Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics, an increasing number of Israelis are avoiding marriage at the rabbinate or overseas. From 2012 to 2014, the number of such people increased by over 25% from 69,000 to 88,000. At the same time, the number of couples marrying in Israel fell by 6.5%.

According to a 2015 poll conducted for the Chiddush for Religious Freedom and Equality organization, 80% of secular Jews said they would not have Orthodox weddings if alternatives were available and nearly half the Jewish public (secular and religious) said the same. The religious respondents apparently want the right to use alternative botei din.

  1. “According to Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics, an increasing number of Israelis are avoiding marriage at the rabbinate or overseas”.

If the problem would be the “Rabbanut”, per se, they could take a short plane ride, and get married in a civil ceremony in nearby Cyprus. The fact that they avoid even this, is indicative that it’s the institution of marriage that they’re avoiding, not the Rabbanut.

I attribute this in part, to the lifestyle of secular people, where relationships outside the context of marriage are not taboo. Thus they see no need to establish their relationships within the framework of the institution of marriage, both religious or even secular.
