Matzah Bowl Seeks Best Kosher Soup

kneidel-soupA Florida retirement home began Pesach celebrations early with a matzah ball soup cook-off to find a recipe for the facility’s new kosher menu. Officials with the Forest Trace retirement home in Lauderhill said six professional caterers participated Monday in the Golden Matzah Bowl and about a dozen amateurs submitted their homemade recipes to be attempted by Forest Trace chef Greg Bainbridge, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday.Organizers said about 200 people came to sample the entries and paid the entrance fee of one box of matzah, destined for the WECARE food pantry.

Lottie Rossman, 91, of Hollywood, whose recipe for matzah ball soup won the “best homemade” competition, said practice makes perfect when it comes to the traditional Pesach food.

“The first time, it never comes out good. You’ve got to try a few times,” she said. “But once you learn, there’s nothing like it.”
