The Gerrer Rebbe z’l in Europe was an incredible masmid who did not read newspapers. Yet he started Hamodia Newspaper in Europe because he understood that the masses want to read something so if he didn’t give them Hamodia, they would read worse.
The Steipler was behind the start of the Yated for the same reason.
