bloombergThe nanny state is going after moms.

Mayor Bloomberg is pushing hospitals to hide their baby formula behind locked doors so more new mothers will feed their babies themselves.

Starting Sept. 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use – the most restrictive pro-nursing program in the nation.

Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.

While nursing activists applaud the move, bottle-feeding moms are bristling at the latest lactation lecture.

Under the program, new mothers who want formula won’t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications.

With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to.

“It’s the patient’s choice,” said Allison Walsh, of Beth Israel Medical Center. “But it’s our job to educate them on the best option.”

Some of the hospitals already operate under the formula lockdown.

“New York City is definitely ahead of the curve,” said Eileen DiFrisco, of NYU Langone Medical Center, where the feeding rate has surged from 39 to 68 percent under the program.

Nursing in the first weeks gives a baby a critical healthy start, many medical experts say. It helps the digestive system develop and protects the baby with the mother’s immunities. Nursing also helps the mother recover from childbirth.

  1. Why does Matzav always squash my first ammendment rights when I call Bloomberg a “Rasha”? Do you feel he’s not?! Ssm, metzitza be peh, etc… What Bl$$mberg is doing now, is exactly what Obama will definitly do if he is G-d forbid, re’elected. A very dangerous situation! We can’t allow Barry to be re’elected!

  2. Riiiiiiiight. If ssomeone suggested that city clinics should encourage women seeking abortion to have the baby, he’d be saying no way, woman’s body, woman’s choice, we’d be trampling her rights by interfering. But if she doesn’t want to nurse? Suddenly, it’s OK.

  3. I always contended that my child is mine till 120 IY”H. I can use a little help in the most difficult first few hours. It doesn’t mean I will love my child any less. In fact, if I can recover instead of struggle to care for my new baby at the most difficult time, I will love him/her more and resent him/her less.

  4. LATE BULLETIN:
Bloomberg just said if it’s not a sugary formula and it’s less than 16 ounces it would be okay.

  5. Thank you to those who overturned “term limits” to allow this monster, Bloomberg, to impose his terror on us little stupid citizens!

  6. This is nothing new. My baby was born in a hospital in New Jersey and the nurse told me the same thing. The formula is held under lock and key and every bottle has to be documented like narcotics. Formula companies were not allowed to give sample formulas with diaper bags. Instead the hospital gave out their own bags (with their logo, of course) and a free bag of pampers and some sample size baby shampoo. I didn’t mind that because that was hospital policy to promote nursing. I do mind it coming from government intervention.

  7. From whom is he getting his orders? Or does he believe he’s Napoleon? Maybe he’s dreaming of food-has he been on a diet? Extremely strange!

  8. If he is trying to control the state of new York, at least focus on something worthwhile like ensuring no one votes for Obama

  9. Let the Yiddishe Mammehs & all the other devoted mothers in your great city do their jobs. And you take care of the trash collection & the snowplowing. Oh yeah, and the soft drinks.
