suffern-mayor-dagan-lacorte[Video below.] Suffern Mayor Dagan Lacorte announced he is exploring a run next year to succeed Rockland County Executive C. Scott Vanderhoef (R), who is stepping down after 20 years.  In a video message to supporters, Lacorte, 38, said Rockland needs new leadership so that it’s government “can work for all of us, for a change.”  He is a Democrat.

As Suffern’s two term mayor, Lacorte passed a budget below Governor Andrew Cuomo’s property tax cap, expanded programs for senior citizens and fought a proposed Megamall in Mahwah that threatened the community’s small businesses.

Lacorte, who is married with two daughters, told supporters that the “professional politicians have let us down” and pointed to last years 30% percent county property tax hike as an example of why people cant afford to live in Rockland any more.

As Mayor, Lacorte saved the Bikur Cholim Shabbos House at Good Samaritan Hospital, ensuring that the frum community could continue to perform this mitzvah.  The Shabbos House is a place, off hospital grounds, where families could stay for Shabbos and visit sick friends and family members.  One of the previous Mayors had tried to shut the Shabbos House down.  Mayor Lacorte was instrumental in settling a lawsuit over the appropriate zoning for the Shabbos House.  The settlement negotiated by the Mayor allowed the Shabbos House to continue subject to compliance with all village building, fire and safety codes.

The mayor said he would cut the number of county boards, commissions and departments by 25%, eliminate wasteful earmarks, increase funding for Rockland Community College and protect the county’s natural resources.

Lacorte is a partner in L&L Wealth Management, an investment firm. He served as a Deputy Mayor from 2007 to 2009. A graduate of New York University School of Law, Lacorte is a volunteer for numerous community organizations.
