mccainArizona Sen. John McCain has a message for illegal residents of his state: Go back where you came from. McCain, who has been veering right to try and win his Republican Senate primary against conservative former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, said on Tuesday that he supports immigration reform that would deport those living in the country illegally.

“No amnesty. Many of them need to be sent back,” McCain said during an interview on KQTH-FM in Tucson, Ariz. when describing how he would deal with illegal U.S. residents.

McCain said he supported reform that would create a guest worker program, but was against any plan that would gave illegal immigrants a path to citizenship, according to Congressional newspaper The Hill.

“If we get the border secured, then a temporary legal worker program has to be part of it,” McCain said.

McCain’s statements come just weeks before Arizona’s controversial immigration law kicks in on July 29.

The legislation, which has sparked protests by civil rights and religious groups, mandates that immigrants carry documentation of their status. It also requires police to question people about their immigration status if the cops have “reasonable suspicion.”The Justice Department is likely to file a lawsuit against Arizona for its controversial law on Tuesday, the Daily News has confirmed.

The senator stressed that the guest worker program would be temporary.

“Part of any reform has to be a legal, temporary worker program that is truly temporary,” McCain “Employers who employ people who are here illegally [should be] prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
