MH370 Crew Was Likely Unconscious


mh370-malaysiaWhile announcing a new deep-sea search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, Australian officials said they believe the plane was on autopilot until it ran out of fuel, and that the crew was likely unresponsive due to oxygen

deprivation. The new search zone is based on the most likely scenario that the aircraft headed south across the Indian Ocean with the crew suffering from hypoxia. Hypoxia happens when a plane loses air pressure and human beings subsequently lack oxygen.

This theory now supported by the Australians, was proposed back in March by Clive Irving, who wrote that “[MH370] flew until it ran out of gas” and that “we must assume that the crew and passengers were either unconscious or dead.” Read more at the New York Times.

  1. A freak accident, like the Helios airlines flight from Cyprus. In that case, military jets intercepted it when it was still airborne – but could do nothing.

  2. #2: Because it is a veruy plausible theory, and likely the correct one. Hypoxia-induced plane crashes are documented occurrences that have occurred many times. In fact, it was my second guess as soon as the accident happened (my first guess was deliberate crash by pilot, like the EgyptAir suicide).

  3. The plane went up to 45,000 feet (normal height is 35-37,000) where a lack of oxygen will cause death in 12 seconds. The pilot depressurized the cabin, disabled the oxygen masks. Everyone was dead at that point, Autopilot dropped the plane to a low altitude, well below radar. Auto pilot continued over the Indian Ocean till it ran out of fuel.
