indonesiaRescue officials said Monday they had spotted the wreckage of a missing Indonesian airliner that lost contact with ground control during a short flight in bad weather.

The Trigana Air Service plane disappeared over a mountainous patch of the easternmost province of Papua on Sunday while carrying 54 people. It was unclear if there were any survivors in the crash, officials said. The wreckage was discovered about seven miles from the plane’s destination of Oksibil.

At least seven planes had searched near Mount Tangok early Monday, after residents reported seeing a plane crash into the mountain, according to officials.

The Papua region, where the plane was flying, is covered in jungles and some planes that have disappeared there before have never been recovered. Trigana has had 14 serious incidents since beginning operations in the region in 1991. Read more.
