MLB: It’s Still Illegal to Scout in Cuba

baseball-cubaWednesday’s landmark announcement that President Obama plans to renew diplomatic relations with Cuba sparked new speculation as to how soon Major League Baseball could begin signing players from the island’s isolated talent pool. Within hours MLB quickly sent a directive to all 30 teams that it remains illegal to scout or sign players in Cuba due to the formal economic embargo, which is still in place.

Obama will have to seek approval from Congress before lifting the embargo, and with Republicans in full control beginning in January, that may be unlikely. Read more at the New York Times.
