On a recent Shabbos night, hundreds of secular Jews, including a deputy mayor and city councilors, celebrated the reopening of the Monster (Mifletzet) Bar in Kiryat Yovel’s Yovelim communal center in Yerushalayim. The bar was closed by the Yerushalayim municipality a few months ago. A court canceled the city’s closure order, saying the pub had all the required health and safety permits.

During the twenty-four hours preceding Shabbos, the court rejected three attempts of the city to reverse the decision.

“For months now the Monster Corporation has been trying to operate an illegal pub in the courtyard of the community administration in Kiryat Yovel, against the position of the community administration and the city,” the city council told Haaretz. “The pub has no business license as the law requires and no fire department permit. Meanwhile, alcohol is sold on site and other activities take place that are not permitted on public land.”

Ronen Sharon, director of the communal center where the Monster is located, congratulated Mayor Nir Barkat’s deal with Degel Hatorah which would allow religious and secular neighborhoods to retain their character. He urged Barkat to use municipal funds to promote business and cultural activities in Kiryat Yovel on Shabbos, particularly in the Yovelim center.
