The restoration of Torah funding by the present government is paralleled by an increase in the number of full time yeshiva students, Haaretz reports based on the Statistical Yearbook of Chareidi Society published by the Jerusalem Institute of Israel Studies and the Israel Democracy Institute.

The yearbook noted that the number of yeshiva students in 2015 was 108,390, an 8% increase over the previous year. This compensated for an 8% decline in the number of yeshiva students during the three years from 2012 to 2014, when the Lapid Knesset cut yeshiva support by fifty percent. The drop in yeshiva students during these years was also due to the Lapid draft law’s exemption for 20,000 older yeshiva students.

Under the present government, the yeshiva budget increased from 564 million shekels in 2014 to 1.1 billion shekels this year. There was also a renewal of income insurance for yungeleit with two children.

The yearbook noted that the participation of chareidi men in the workforce has passed 50% for the first time and 19% of chareidi men and women are studying for an academic degree or already have one.

  1. I heard the following:
The various Cheders started charging relatively hefty tuition to cheder parents when the government cut their funding. Understood.
Now that the government has retored that funding, they have continued to charge the same hefty tuition! Something smells!!

    • exactly! seeing how people protested when funding was cut. maybe now more acknowledgement of the good the state does should be directed towards the government of Israel!
