iraq1The summer is off to a gruesome start in Iraq as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Sham (ISIS) continues its brutal assault. So far in the month of June, 1,075 people have been killed, and most of them are civilians, a United Nations human-rights team said Tuesday.

UN human-rights office spokesman Rupert Colville said, “This figure-which should be viewed very much as a minimum-includes a number of verified summary executions and extrajudicial killings of civilians, police, and soldiers who were hors (de) combat,” which means soldiers who have signaled they are no longer in combat. He added that there have also been “a number of alleged human-rights violations that have been taking place in Iraq.”
