The Long Island businessman whose questionable payments to Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert led to the lawmaker’s resignation has been identified as a victim of Bernard Madoff’s alleged mega-Ponzi scheme, his lawyer has said.
Morris Talansky, 76, lost “a substantial amount of money,” said Bradley Simon, his criminal defense lawyer. Although he didn’t give an exact dollar amount, Simon said his client lost “in excess of a million dollars.”
Simon said Talansky had known Madoff for a number of years, but did not elaborate on the relationship.
Talansky is currently being probed by federal authorities, who are eyeing having him indicated for allegedly bribing Olmert in violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
