passportThe words “mother” and “father” will be removed from U.S. passport applications and replaced with gender neutral terminology, the State Department says.

“The words in the old form were ‘mother’ and ‘father,'” said Brenda Sprague, deputy assistant Secretary of State for Passport Services. “They are now ‘parent one’ and ‘parent two.'”

A statement on the State Department website noted: “These improvements are being made to provide a gender neutral description of a child’s parents and in recognition of different types of families.” The statement didn’t note if it was for child applications only.

The State Department said the new passport applications, not yet available to the public, will be available online soon.

Sprague said the decision to remove the traditional parenting names was not an act of political correctness.

“We find that with changes in medical science and reproductive technology that we are confronting situations now that we would not have anticipated 10 or 15 years ago,” she said.

Toeivah rights groups are applauding the decision.

“Changing the term mother and father to the more global term of parent allows many different types of families to be able to go and apply for a passport for their child without feeling like the government doesn’t recognize their family,” said Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of Family Equality Council.

Her organization lobbied the government for several years to remove the words from passport applications.

“Our government needs to recognize that the family structure is changing,” Chrisler said.

But some conservative Christians are outraged over the decision.

“Only in the topsy-turvy world of left-wing political correctness could it be considered an ‘improvement’ for a birth-related document to provide less information about the circumstances of that birth,” Family Research Council president Tony Perkins wrote in a statement to Fox News Radio. ”

Robert Jeffress, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Dallas, agreed. “It’s part of an overall attempt at political correctness to diminish the distinction between men and women and to somehow suggest you don’t need both a father and a mother to raise a child successfully,” said Jeffress.

The new gender-neutral passport application will be rolled out in February.

  1. Let’s change ‘child’ to offspring and we can include pets – and then the animal rights folks will be happy!
    Yoish!

  2. “We find that with changes in medical science and reproductive technology that we are confronting situations now that we would not have anticipated 10 or 15 years ago,” Well that is a true statement and B”H those changes mean that some women who could not bear children 15 years ago now can. Some men who could not father children 15 years ago, now can. But to the best of my knowledge every child born still needs a female mother and a male father. That hasn’t changed at all. Two women or two men can claim to be the child’s “parents” but a man cannot be the child’s mother nor can a woman be the child’s father. Some things just don’t change. All this shows is how totally stupid and idiotic some people are.

  3. We have plasic, synthetic, food dye, disposable plates forks and knives, (etc) and now we have disposable roles. Everything goes in the trash.
How utterly sad. What will this create in children? maybe it will cause them to want spirituality because they will be so bereft of it….

  4. ” to somehow suggest you don’t need both a father and a mother to raise a child successfully”
what an insulting comment as if surrogate parents or a single parent cant raise a child successfully. Is it harder, probably, but I know of plenty people who are yesomim/ from divorced couples and have been raised quite succesfully thank you very much. Do us all a favor Mr. Jeffress and take your ignorant comments out of the public sphere

  5. It’s only a matter of time until it changes to something along the lines of Dr. Seuss’s “Thing #1” and “Thing #2” – “Parent” implies someone has authority, which would also be politically incorrect in this crazy climate.

  6. to #2 Harder probably? Ask anybody who was raised with only one parent. It’s a tremendous handicap which is why the Torah urges us to be especially sensitive to the plight of an orphan. As for those who turn out fine, it’s DESPITE not having both parents to raise them. Mr. Jeffress is absolutely right for protesting the agenda of immoral people (the kind of people that brought a Flood to destroy the world).

  7. The liberal agenda against traditional families is a terrible social experiment and is certainly an echo of the Dor Hamabul. It will only end in pathetic results for all those poor innocent children, not to mention the far reaching hashpaah on the entire world. We must all use whatever political clout we have to combat this movement.

  8. #9 I agree with your first two statments and nowhere have i said anything disagreeing with them, my apolagies if youve misunderstood. i lose you in your third complelty unrelated statemtn.
you seem to agree that “you dont need both a mother and father to raise a child succesfully” (though it is undoubetedly easier.) Thus Mr. jefress’ statment to the contrary is both ignorant and offensive
