shalit-fatherAviva Shalit, accompanied by her husband Noam Shalit, has made her first trip to the United States to march in the annual Salute to Israel Parade along Fifth Avenue in New York City today. The Shalits are the parents of kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who was abducted on June 25, 2006, by a group of Palestinian terrorists who crossed the border south of the Gaza Strip into Israel, through a tunnel near Kerem Shalom, and attacked an army facility that was within the sovereign territory of Israel. Gilad has been held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip ever since his abduction, with no word as to his condition.

Aviva and Noam Shalit will depart from the parade’s starting point and begin marching at approximately 12 p.m. They will be marching under a large banner that says “Free Gilad Shalit Now!”

Aviva Shalit has long resisted leaving her native Israel, but with the 3rd anniversary of her son’s abduction drawing near, she has made the uncomfortable decision to travel to the U.S. in order to raise awareness of Gilad’s plight within the New York Jewish community, and among New York’s elected officials who will also be participating in this event. Surrounded by supporters, Gilad Shalit’s parents will march down Fifth Avenue and demand their son’s freedom.

The Salute to Israel Parade is the largest event in the world celebrating the anniversary of Israel’s Independence, with over 100,000 participants and one-million spectators.
