It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Mrs. Pearl Benisch a”h, a Holocaust survivor whose faith sustained her through the darkest of times.

Mrs. Benisch was one of the last remaining students of the educational pioneer Sarah Schenirer, a humble Krakow seamstress who led a quiet revolution by establishing the first religious school system for girls in Eastern Europe. The values imbued in Mrs. Benisch by her family and remarkable teacher kept her going throughout the hardest of times.

Mrs. Beinisch was a survivor of the barbarism of a number of ghettos, the Plaszow labor camp, the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, and the subsequent death march to Bergen-Belsen. During those six long years, she was one of a small group of brave young women who drew strength from remembering the lessons they had learned at Sarah Shenirer’s kitchen table. These values enabled them to perform countless acts of kindness in the shadows of the valley of death, often at great risk to their own lives.

Mrs. Beinisch’s life was one full of lessons about faith and humanity, an inspiring life of immense courage, generosity of spirit and a desperate desire to survive with a purpose amidst unspeakable suffering.

Mrs. Benisch was a bestselling author, documenting her story in several volumes, including “To Vanquish the Dragon” and “Carry Me in Your Heart: The Life and Legacy of Sarah Schenirer.”

  1. Remarkable human being. “To Vanquish the Dragon” is transcendent, and should be required reading for every Jewish girl.

  2. Remarkable human being. “To Vanquish the Dragon” is transcendent, and should be required reading for every Jewish girl. This book proves that a sense of self and a sense of selflessness can be preserved in circumstances meant to strip one of all human dignity. Absolutely a legacy of greatness.

  3. So let’s review. What is Matzav.com policy regarding showing pictures and videos of Frum women? Who decides how to pick and choose? Who decides who is chashuv that one can bend the rules, and when do they play PC? In my humble opinion Matzav has shown time and again that they are immature hypocrites. It is very troubling when they make it up as they go. For shame.
