candleIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of Mrs. Shami Reinman a”h of Lakewood, NJ.

Mrs. Reinman was the wife of Rav Yaakov Yosef Reinman, well-known mechaber seforim and author.

Mrs. Reinman was a heroic woman whose greatness was magnified a hundred-fold during the last few years as she battled illness.

Shami was a vibrant young teacher, barely fifty years old, full of energy and vitality, deeply involved with her students in the classroom and in her home, the queen of her family, who danced and played with her grandchildren, when she was struck by a dreadful disease. Her world turned over. She could no longer teach. Her movement and speech grew progressively worse over the agonizing years. What did the future hold for her but more inevitable decline?

In fact, the future held so much.

Determined not to sink into despondency and despair, Shami resolved to mold a new life for herself. That life was described by Shami in her book, Upwards, which depicts her story of spiritual triumph over her affliction. She found comfort in her family and the joyous celebrations of family milestones. She spent time with her siddur and her Tehillim. And as she became more limited, the circle of her friends widened and their visits were occasions of joy and laughter.

Shami spent innumerable hours working on her book, often having to dictate her thoughts and memories to others, but what emerged was a story of a woman who, with pure emunah and bitachon, accepted her fate even as she struggled against it. She rebuilt her life by seeking out the islands of joy in the sea of her suffering and living on those islands to the fullest. And she felt blessed.

Shami was an inspiration to one and all, children and adults, men and women, and people of all backgrounds.

Her passing leaves a gaping void.

The levaya will take place tomorrow morning, Monday, February 23, at 10:30 a.m., at Bais Medrash Kol Aryeh, located at 521 Hope Chapel Road in Lakewood, NJ.

Shivah will be held at the Reinman home, located at 59 Steven Lane in Lakewood, NJ.

Yehi zichrah boruch.
