New York – The MTA is delaying its plan to charge $1 each time you buy a new MetroCard. Problems with reprogramming the vending machines to add the fee forced the agency to push back the surcharge until a least January.
The agency says the charge for a new card is expected to bring in an additional $20 million a year.
The software update will also allow riders to refill unlimited cards, which right now must be replaced once they expire.
