vizhnitzer-rebbe-bnei-brakThis past week, the vort celebrating the engagement of a great-grandson of both the Vizhnitzer Rebbe of Bnei Brak and the Vizhnitzer Rebbe of Monsey, who are brothers, was announced. The chosson is a son of Rav Boruch Shamshon Hager, a son of the Vizhnitzer Rebbe of Monsey, who is a son-in-law of Rav Yisroel Hager, the oldest son of the Vizhnitzer Rebbe of Bnei Brak. The kallah is a granddaughter of the Kretchnifer Rebbe, as well as Rav Yisroel Eliezer Adler, rov of Shikkun Vizhnitz in Rechovot.

  1. How about adding that the kallah who is a daughter of Rav Chaim Meir Ernster is also a granddaughter of the Ziditchover Rebbe (Chicago) and a great-granddaughter of the Strassburger Rav (Rav Avrohom Dovid Horowitz zt”l).

  2. do these young people have any accomplishments/characteristics of their own, or the only thing that matters is who their family are?

  3. MAZEL TOV! This is in addition to…

Even longtime Chassidim are raising their eyebrows: A 16-year-old young man is engaged to his 15-year-old second cousin, both great grandchildren from ‘Chassidei Viznitz.” Thousands of members of the Viznitz Chassidic sect, one of the largest and wealthiest in the world, are expected to attend the festive wedding ceremony, which will take place in approximately another year.

The engagement ceremony in Bnei Brak attracted more attention than usual. Both sides are great-grandchildren of the same “Admor,” the title of the leader of a Chassidic group. But their ages also were a center of interest. The groom-to-be is Chaim Meir Hagar, who learns in a Viznitz yeshiva, and his future wife is 10th grader Hinda Rosenbaum, who learns in a hareidi religious school in Rehovot.

Although the young man and woman will be a year older next year, the engagement ceremony was held Wednesday night, an unusually long period before a hareidi religious wedding, due to the importance of the families.

“We have a tradition of marrying at a young age, but we usually mean 19-22, although there have been occasions of marriages before the age of 18,” one Viznitz member told the Hebrew-language daily Yisrael HaYom. “However, marrying at the age of 15 is definitely exceptional.”

In the “Ethics of the Fathers (Pirkei Avot)”, part of the Talmud, the rabbis teach that people should be mature and ready for marriage at the age of 18, but the rabbis also teach that this is a generalization and does not necessarily apply to every individual

  4. There is no room for cynicism here, question. This is a simcha for Klal Yisroel. If you don’t have the right yichus, then go jump in the lake (or river).

  5. this is not cynicism, why is this more of a simcha than ANY 2 Yidden getting married? We’ve gone from being children of Avraham Avinu who was the SON of an idol worshipper, to oursleves worshipping yichus. Do you think Avraham, Onkelos, Rabbi Akiva, Resh LAkish could get shidduchim today?
