shooting-los-angelesA member of the Los Angeles Jewish community was shot to death yesterday afternoon at the Sunset T Shirts Warehouse on the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Serrano Avenue in Hollywood. Mordechai Bayer z”l, a noted senior member of the frum community, was shot by the owner of the Sunset T-Shirts Warehouse, who then apparently shot himself.

Police confirmed that a handgun was found inside the store and that they were not looking for any outstanding suspects in the case.

R’ Mordechai, according to sources, had gone to collect rent from the Hollywood store when the incident occurred.

When Police and Fire personnel arrived, they attempted to give aid to R’ Mordechai, who had sustained serious gunshot wounds, but to no avail. An innocent life had been snuffed out by a murderer who then took his own life.

Police continue to investigate this tragic incident.

  1. R’ Mordechai was a yid that use to come every morning to the los angeles (lakewood) kollel and learn from 9 till 12 before he went out to work

  2. This man was an ed (witness) at my brothers wedding a few weeks ago in LA. He is a Sephardic Rabbi in valley village. Special man and tragic loss.

  3. A devastating tragedy. An immense loss to his wonderful family, to the Los Angeles Kehilla and to Am Yisrael. Rav Mordechai was dedicated to Torah and mitzvot and chessed. He was a caring father and truly respected and loved by all. There is no doubt that Rav Mordechai z”l was taken from us as a korban.

  4. He was a very special man. Very encouraging and a true Yirat Shamayim. He was a real Talmid Chacham and a Ba’al Chesed. He will be missed greatly.

  5. This is a huge loss. Everyone will feel this loss on a personal level, whether feeling the loss of a great friend, mentor, or the bochurim losing a major supporter of there yeshiva. Baruch Dayan HaEmes

  6. I knew Mordechai for years, though we’ve been out of touch for quite a while. A truly amazing person. So saddened by this.

  7. I have only known Rabbi Bayer for less than two years. In that time I have grown very fund of him. He was an amazing person and someone I respect greatly. I will dearly miss our weekly learning. This is a devastating tragedy for the entire community, and in fact the entire Jewish world.
