Muslims Go Nuts After Israel Appoints Female Sharia Judge

3

Hardline Muslims slammed the appointment of Hana Khatib from the lower Galilee as Israel’s first female sharia (religious) judge, or qadit.

“I smell a political deal here in the sharia court system,” said Sheikh Kamal Khatib, deputy head of the illegal Northern Branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel. “I am not a mufti, but the opinion in the Islamic sharia is that a woman should not be appointed as a qadit.”

The more moderate Southern Branch of the Islamic Movement supported her appointment. MK Aida Touma-Suleiman of the Joint Arab List, chairperson of the Knesset’s Committee on the Status of Women and Gender Equality, noted that she petitioned the Supreme Court to ensure the appointment of female qadits and submitted a Knesset bill to this effect in 2015.

Two female judges serve on sharia courts in the Palestinian Authority.

  1. for the muslims to be outraged that israel appoint women sharia judges is something that we, as jews, can probably well understand. just imagine what would happen if israel appointed women to sit as bais din judges. we would also “go nuts”.
