earthFor the first time in history, scientists have found a planet like Earth. NASA announced Thursday that its Kepler-planet finding mission has discovered Kepler186f, which is made up of the same materials as Earth (iron, rock, ice, and water) and is located in the same “Goldilocks zone” of a star that allows for liquid water and potentially life.

“Perhaps it’s more of an Earth cousin than an Earth twin,” Dr. Thomas Barclay of the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute said. Read more at The New York Times.

  1. I am quite certain that our hashkafa has no problem with the possibility of “life” in outer space. What is problematic though is the idea of any species (alien or other) that can communicate and think like a human. In this regard I feel it is safe to say that the Torah does not allow for such a possibility.

As a footnote there is some discussion of the words “Arur Meroz Arur Yoshveha” in Shiras Devora but I don’t know exactly what is meant by some of the commentaries there. In addition, (if my memory serves me correctly) the Sefer Habris may have an opinion on this topic.

  2. Star Trek had a show once just like this information, and since it had water and air there were strange plants that were dangerous to humans.

  3. Some people think we will be impressed by this reports but…I was stated before this world is for benei odom the childeren of odom ha rishon.
There maybe other worlds so what…Malchuscho malchus kol oilomim uhmenshaltecho bechol dor vodor!!!!!
